Cue-Up:: November 29 2007

It was a dark and dreary night, for Cue-Up yesterday eve. Large and small violations of war conventions and murders flickered before us... finally, a puffy pink curtain descended.

Our guest presentation featured a screening of two works by independent video maker and educator Christopher Pavsek. He offered The one and all (7:00) and To those born after (29:00).
You can find more about his work here: pavsekfilms.com
Thank you for your screening, q&a, and for sticking around to see the works that came 'from the floor', Christopher.

The audience work screened:
Nic Brown, Aaron, 8:12, DVD. "A short film about a horrible man."
Jeff Languille, (untitled), 10:41, MiniDV. "Part of a series of 'landscape' works."
Brian Lye, Pink Paper Bag Man visits East Africa, 7:15, DVD. "A road trip documented in a group creative fashion."
Chris Brown, mouse, 1:00, DVD. "About mouse traps."

Watch this space for details on next year's series of Cue-Up events featuring the on-going theme: hospitality...

Can't wait to see you all there. In the meantime, feel free to leave comments about what you saw last night!

Paul Wong got 'unplugged' and everyone stayed the night

Pw_unpluggedCue Up was a buzz last Thursday night (September 27) when Paul Wong presented about ten of his recent video projects and works in progress. A week later, his images are still interrupting me. The views he shared were close to the body and persistent in their concern for community. It was moving and inspiring...that is an understatement. It is great to have Paul Wong hanging around VIVO again. Thank you for last week's generosity, Paul. Especially, thank you for sticking around and giving newer video producers some feed back. I have started a photo album (see left column). More photos of the event are to come.

Screening from the audience after Wong's presentation were the following:

Jeremy Isad Speir, Oratory, DVD, we saw an excerpt of about 15:00
Brian Kent Gotro, Mouth Trick and The Notion of Self, 10:00 (both on miniDV)
Laura Lee Coles, Air Light Sound, 4:30, miniDV
Cory Bildstein, Untitled, 4:40, DVD
Bojan, Russ, 6:00, DVD
Brian Lyg, Board Master, 9:00, DVD
Jeff Langille, Landscape ... , 5:46, MiniDV
Nic Brown, Two Short Films by Nic, 9:00, DVD

COMING SOON

Flyer33w_3 Mark Your Calendars:
September 27th, our next Cue Up event, will present artist Paul Wong to share his recent work and also provide another opportunity to all video producers to show their work or works in progress.  If interested please bring your works on VHS, DVD or MiniDV to Video In Video Out at 1965 Main Street, Vancouver, BC by 7:30 pm to be screened at 8pm. Screenings will be on a first come first served basis.

About Paul Wong:

This co-founding director and visionary influential member of Video In is back on Main Street ready to roll tape.
This very special evening will include preview of recent, new and works in progress. The first informal video salon that Wong
has hosted for many years in Vancouver.

Since his teenage years, Paul Wong has used video as mirror  and probe, both to discover his own identity and to interact with the world at  large. Based in Vancouver, he is a self-invented video pioneer and  award-winning artist, curator, and organizer of events, conferences, and  public interventions since the 1970s. His work is varied and eclectic, ranging  from conceptual performances to complex narratives. He is known particularly  for his tough engagement with issues of race, sex, and  death.

Winner of the Bell Canada Award in Video Art in 1992, he  was the first recipient of the Transforming Art Award from the Asian Heritage  Foundation in 2002 and the inaugural winner of the Trailblazer Expressions  Award in 2003, created by Heritage Canada, the National Film Board, and CHUM  Limited (one of Canada's leading media companies and content providers). In  2005, Paul Wong received Canada's
Governor  General's Award in Visual and Media Arts.

Links & News

Movie_girl_2 Last week's Cue-Up generated more discussion about the use of small format film footage in video. This seems to be a continuation of the excitement around the "wildly successful" 2nd Annual Super8 Film Festival that was produced by Project 8 on June 29th at VIVO. In fact one of last week's volunteers and participants, Tiina Liimu, was a Project 8 participant. She showed the film-based video that emerged from her Project8 involvement.
The music video, Forget About It, that was screened by Will, included some found film footage. By the way the band featured in Forget About It is The Elixxxirs .

From our discussions, I promised to post a link to Kevin Scromeda of Bright Light Transfers ("specializing in small format film and analogue transfers"). I have found his transfers to be of very high quality and affordable price. He can be reached through email: brightlight(at)telus.net

We have the 'LINKS' column initiated to the left, so let us know if we need to add something! Use the comments button at the end of the post, or email us at cueup(at)videoinstudios.com for comments, communiques, opinions, ideas...
